One look at the variety of half-stale muffins and rolls in the café display case and Curt grimaced. If they had been ever been edible, that time was long past. Odds were all the food tasted of the old cigarette smoke and coffee fumes that hung in the air. Fuck it, he hadn't been awake long enough to eat anyway. Nevermind that it was already two in the afternoon. Looking up as the girl at the register cleared her throat impatiently, he slapped a pack of cigarettes on the counter.
"Just coffee, thanks."
Curt leaned against the counter and eased his wallet out of his jeans. As he pulled a few bills out, a funny feeling crawled up his spine and made the back of his neck tingle. Somebody was watching him; he could sense the heavy weight of someone's gaze. Sure, Sonny's Café wasn't the classiest of places, but you usually didn't have to worry about getting mugged there. Looking over his shoulder cautiously, he encountered a pair of hazel gold eyes. A young man, looking too lost to be dangerous, dressed in a heavy black coat, long silver brown hair falling into his face, stood behind him.
"Hey," Curt nodded, unsure of what to say, but knowing that he wanted to say something.
"Good afternoon." British, educated, the young man spoke with a pleasant accent.
The man smiled slowly, the look in his eyes warm and friendly; for a moment, Curt felt as if he knew the other man, as if he had known him a long time ago and that a memory lingered hidden behind their shared smile. With a shrug, Curt turned back to the cashier and handed her the five dollar bill that he was holding. He could still feel the other man's gaze on him, but it was more exciting than disturbing.
Pocketing his change and gathering up his breakfast, Curt walked away from the counter and chose a seat in the back corner. Curt dumped sugar and cream into his coffee, keeping an eye on the man as he approached the cashier and placed his order. He looked a kid, for Christ's sake, staring up at the menu board and pushing his hair back with one hand.
He pulled a handful of coins and rumpled bills from the pocket of his coat and darted his eyes from the number on the register to the money in his hand. A look of concentration fixed itself on his face until he handed the cashier what appeared to be a ten-dollar bill. The look changed to nervous concern when the girl gave him a skeptical glance. The tea cost thirty-five cents, and he most certainly had enough random dimes and quarters in his hand to cover that. He relaxed slightly when he got his tea and change, but gazed with confusion as he surveyed the haphazard arrangement of chairs and tables in the café.
He walked toward the back of the café, his steps slow and wary, as if he wanted nobody to notice him. But Curt couldn't help but watch the kid. Underneath the unsure exterior, he had a feral sort of grace. Curt lit a cigarette, inhaled deeply and blew the smoke up to the ceiling. As he lowered his head, he made sure to catch the kid's eyes and smile. What the hell? The young man was good looking and Curt was alone.
"You're welcome to join me." He kicked his foot off the chair opposite him and waved his cigarette at the now empty seat. "If you want."
"Thank you." Slim fingers tracing the edge of his styrofoam cup, he sat down hesitantly across from Curt.
"No problem. I don't like eating breakfast alone anyway." Curt crushed his cigarette in an already full ashtray and held out his hand. "Curt. Curt Wild."
"Remus Lupin. Nice to meet you." He smiled with a bit more confidence. "This is your breakfast? Coffee and cigarettes?"
Remus Lupin. What the fuck? What kind of name is that? Curt nodded slowly. Remus shook his hand firmly. Different. Strange. Sexy. Beautiful. A fucking beautiful name. He held Remus' hand in his a few seconds after the handshake ended, his eyes falling on Remus' wrist. Slim, elegant and strong, like a musician or an artist. Someone dropped something and with the loud clash of voices and broken glass, Curt's eyes snapped back up and he let Remus' hand slip from his grip.
"Yeah. Habit I got into when I was a bit younger. It's more than you're having, though." Curt slid the cigarettes over. "Here, we'll have breakfast together."
They both smiled and the conversation suddenly became very easy and comfortable. They meandered from topic to topic until Curt found himself staring into a pair of calm, hazel eyes. Staring and mumbling about the radio station at which he worked until he looked away and forced himself to swallow down the last of his lukewarm coffee.
It's freaking weird, the people you meet at Sonny's, Curt thought as he lit up another cigarette. He paused, removed it from between his lips and passed it to Remus. What was this kid (who turned out not to be so much of a kid after all, but a fucking professor or something) doing in a dank, seedy café drinking lousy tea and smoking with Curt Wild? He pulled out a cigarette for himself and watched Remus take a drag on his own smoke, long fingers still balancing it as he inhaled. Remus breathed out slowly, gray-white smoke drifting from his parted lips. He reached over the table with his free hand and touched Curt's wrist as they spoke, his eyes flickering with shyness for a moment. And when the two fingers stroked his wrist almost imperceptibly, Curt knew why the fuck *he* was still sitting there, his coffee long finished, a pile of burnt out matches at the bottom of the cup.
"I should probably let you go," Remus said as Curt looked into the coffee cup, "I don't think you meant to eat breakfast until four in the afternoon."
"I guess today's special." Curt rose at the same time Remus did. Crazy hope filled his heart and he sucked in a careful breath. As he leaned against the door, he placed a hand on Remus' forearm. "Where are you headed now?"
"Nowhere, really." He replied and stepped out of the café.
"Well, how about if I walk you there? I think we might be headed in the same direction." And, as they walked up the sidewalk together, even before Remus agreed, it rather seemed like they were.
"You're British, aren't you?" Curt asked and lit up another cigarette. The wind whipped the smoke back in his face, a cold, damp March breeze. "Is that why you had such problems with the money?"
"British, yes, I suppose that's why, yes. I was wondering if you'd comment. I've recently just come to New York." A shadow of sadness crossed his eyes. "I wanted to forget something, a friend I used to have."
The sky and sidewalk were gray, and for a moment, the emotion made Remus' eyes look the same dull color. Their footsteps had brought them to a large building with a brick façade. Curt motioned toward it with his head, shrugging his hair off his face.
"My building." Trying to make the statement sound less like a proposition, he lowered his voice. "I lived there for a while too, in England, but came back here. To forget someone, too. And sometimes I do, Remus."
Almost to his surprise, Remus pressed a hand between his shoulder blades and led him to the stairs. Curt flicked his cigarette away and walked with arm around Remus into his building. There was something about those eyes that made him trust Remus as they flashed bright hazel gold once again. The cloud of emotion had passed and he smiled gently, knowingly, as Curt opened the door to his apartment.
The door clicked shut quietly. Curt slid out of his leather jacket and wet his lips, expecting a somewhat awkward moment. But before he could offer Remus anything, just to break the silence, two hands threaded through his hair and pulled his head down. The kiss was anything but awkward - forceful, deep, hungry - but not awkward. His tongue slid over Curt's, reached far into his mouth, then slipped out to lick his lips. As soon as Curt realized what had happened, the kiss ended and Remus drew his head back.
"You sure, Curt? I could leave." With a smile, he pushed a fall of hair from his face and gave Curt a look that made him want nothing more than for Remus to stay.
"Like hell you're leaving. After that kiss?" Curt reached over and pulled Remus' hand away from his face. He brought it to his own face, ran his tongue across Remus' palm and kissed the center.
After tossing his own jacket onto the couch, Curt led Remus to his bedroom. The bed still unmade, a few articles of clothing scattered on the floor, the room had an atmosphere of lazy slumber. Lit by the dull light of a cloudy afternoon, it invited comfort and warmth. Curt stood behind Remus and slid the heavy cloak off his shoulders and draped it on a chair. He then slid his hands around Remus' chest and unbuttoned his shirt. Pulling the plain, blue shirt out of Remus' trousers, he kissed the back of the other man's neck, head buried in the soft curtain of hair. The shirt dropped to the floor and Curt moved his lips over Remus' shoulder.
Fingertips petting the lightly furred skin of Remus' chest, Curt nipped and sucked the smooth skin of his shoulders and nape of his neck. Remus groaned low in his throat, a growling purr of a noise, and pressed his body up against Curt's. The pressure of warm body to warm body stirred the need inside Curt to pure arousal. His erection strained against the tight denim of his jeans and he nudged his hips toward Remus, a flood of energy flowing from his groin outwards. Placing his hands on his lover's hips, Curt turned Remus around to face him.
He dipped his head down and caught Remus' lips in a slow kiss. Remus had a teasing way of kissing deeply then tugging away just enough to make Curt chase after his lips. Mid-kiss he slipped his tongue over Curt's, sucked Curt's lower lip into his mouth and pulled Curt nearer to him. Curt opened his eyes as their lips separated and moved his face so that their noses bumped. Smiling, Remus pulled the edge of Curt's tee-shirt.
"I'd like to see you take this off." Remus rubbed the center of Curt's chest with the back of his hand. Dropping his hand to Curt's jeans, he pressed it to his crotch. "And these, too."
Curt swallowed back the new surge of arousal he felt when Remus' fingers nimbly unbuttoned his jeans. He wanted the delicious anticipation to last as long as possible; as if he could make the tight pleasure of love making last all afternoon, only falling down when orgasm and evening led them to sleep. But the slim, cool fingers that skimmed over his cock were so tempting, so teasing, that he had to step back. After a quick smooch, he put enough room between himself and Remus for both of them to struggle out of the rest of their clothing.
Even in the weak sunlight, the thin white scars and jagged lacerations that covered Remus' upper body were visible. Curt lightly touched the ragged latticework of scar tissue that edged down Remus' right side and to his hipbone.
"Holy fuck, who did this to you?" Long and low, Curt's breath whistled from between pursed lips. "Who hurt you like this?"
"Nobody, don't worry about it." Remus shook his head.
"The guy, back in England, he hurt you?" Memory flashed in Curt's mind. The man he left in England had hurt him, not like this, but just as sharply. "He hurt you, didn't he?"
"No, it's not like that." The sadness dimmed Remus' eyes again as he lifted Curt's hand from his hip. "Come here, Curt."
Remus kicked the pile of clothing to the side and urged Curt into the circle of his arms. "He never hurt me. And even if he did, the past is not what's important here."
Curt pulled the other man close to him and kissed him as if he could erase all those scars. The little lines of pain on his skin, the old bruises that discolored his pale complexion. He kissed Remus hungrily, as if he could erase the scars of his own past. Remus' hand touched his cheek, forcing him to end the kiss and breathe for a moment. His lover's warm, damp breath on his face and lips, Curt felt the pain of memory melt away and be replaced with desire. Desire to make love to the man who was willing to share his bed this afternoon, desire to enjoy this time.
Taking Remus' hand in his own, Curt walked over to the bed. He picked through the stuff that littered his bedside table, eventually pulling out a container of lube and shoving some of the other things aside.
With a growl, Curt pushed Remus onto the bed and covered the other man's mouth with his own. The brush of his cock against Remus' thigh was too good, too overwhelmingly good. He pressed his tongue forcefully into his lover's mouth and kissed him until his lungs hurt, then continued to kiss him, exhaling loudly through his nose.
Panting through wet lips, Curt looked down at Remus. The glint in his hazel eyes was warm and feral. It tempted Curt to forego any tender touches or nuzzling. He wanted to feel and taste this man inside him, to make Remus' heat part of himself. Curt licked his lips slowly and dipped his head down again. A nipping path to Remus' groin and a sliding down between his legs was enough preparation. After a swipe of his tongue over the tip of Remus' cock, he took the whole length into his mouth.
God, he felt good in Curt's mouth. Already hard and ready, all Curt had to do was suck him and let Remus fuck his mouth. He slid his hands up his lover's sides and rested them on his thighs. He took Remus in as far as he could, the tip of his cock bumping the back of Curt's throat. Beneath his hands, Remus strained to rock his hips as he let out a broken sigh. Stronger than he looked, he pushed his hips up despite Curt's efforts to restrain him. Even that aroused Curt, the forceful way desire made Remus struggle and fight against him, the way his hands couldn't keep Remus from trying to push deeper inside him.
With a loud groan, Remus surged upwards from the bed and came hard and fast into Curt's mouth. The sound was wild, raw and sharp, and it sent a shock through to Curt's groin. He swallowed the hot liquid, moving his hands up and down Remus' thighs. Touching the other man, tasting his come in his mouth, hearing the ragged breaths he took as Curt suckled his cock, made that shock echo through Curt again. He let Remus' erection slip from his lips and kissed the inside of his thigh.
"You're like a wolf in bed." Remus muttered as Curt licked his way from Remus' thigh to his collarbone.
"Yeah?" Curt scraped his teeth over Remus' neck, then snarled playfully as he looked up. "You'd know, man?"
"God yes, I would." And with a flash of sharp, white teeth and bright eyes, Remus snarled back at Curt.
Curt grunted with feeling near desperation. Snatching the lube, he spread slickness over his hands and cock. He was so hard that his own touch made him want to come and spill himself over Remus' chest and stomach. But a look at Remus' body, warm with lust, convinced him to preserve an ounce of patience. He slipped a hand between Remus' thighs and spread the lube over his entrance. His erection so hard it hurt, Curt slid his fingers inside Remus and made sure he was ready. The handful of seconds seemed to take forever.
But it was worth it. Curt thrust his cock into Remus with a force that made them both gasp. He remained still for a moment, the world was motionless as the afternoon sun faded and this beautiful man lay beneath him. Then Curt moved, fast and fierce inside his lover. The pain of arousal built and burst into a flood of pleasure. His orgasm came quickly and with a sense of satisfaction that Curt hadn't felt in a long time. When the last wave of climax shuddered through his limbs, he collapsed down next to Remus, heavy-limbed and satiated.
Soft lips touched his shoulder as Remus ran his fingers through the sweaty tangle of Curt's hair. Curt, through a haze of drowsy satisfaction, felt a blanket cover his body and Remus curl up next to him. He wasn't sure if it was the way Remus rubbed circles on his back or the way he nuzzled his neck before falling asleep, but Curt could tell he wouldn't wake up alone. Before falling asleep himself, Curt smiled and hoped Remus liked coffee and cigarettes for breakfast.
